Hotel was nice and the spa treatments were fantastic. Sadly the room was a little dirty with half a dozen dead insects on the window ledge which we had to ask to be removed. The food was very disappointing. The Michelin size portions promised a lot but lacked flavour and parts were luke warm at best. The service in the restaurant was poor and a couple of heated discussions were heard from the till area. Maybe one competent member of staff resulted in us waiting for 30 mins before asking to see the dessert menu. We were never offered another drink after we ordered in the bar beforehand. Such a disappointing stay after so much promise.
This hotel is in a lovely setting and is very well maintained. Most of all though the staff are all amazingly helpful and accomodating. We had to complain at the first room we were allocated as was a bit cold and was a bit of a musty smell however staff were superb at responding to this and instantly upgraded us free of charge. The food is very nouvelle but was of high standard and also the staff in the restaurant too were very friendly too. The spa has a large array of facilities too but my only negative would be that it is all a bit compact and could do with expanding. Overall though a very enjoyable and relaxing break away.
We have been to the Spa previously and loved it - great staff, environment and facilities. This time round, a month later, it was rather poor. Apparently the free spa slippers have been withdrawn, but it is still advertised as part of the package. You have to hunt for someone to get your Prosecco.. last time we had lovely glass flutes full up by the hot-tub. This time it was a half full, warm plastic 'glass' and we had to sit dripping wet in the dayroom (or whatever it is called!) Some of the jets weren't working in the spa pool andwe were called at ten to nine to say we had ten minutes left. The clock has disappeared from the Spa so they lady told us when it was 9pm (the spa session is 6-9pm. We showered and changed quickly by 9.10 only to find all the staff waiting to go, handbags in tow, folded arms and cross looking and one commented that "I did tell them they had 10 minutes" rather snorkily right in fromnt of us. It appears that we have to be GONE by 9pm. We did not know this as last time the ladies very nicely let us stay in til 9.10pm before they called us to leave. If they take the clock down how are we supposed to know what time it is anyway! The flip flops left out to use were all od sizes i.e a large right foot and a medium left foot, my robe didn't have a belt at all and some people had hideous purple tent-like robes that they were actually really embarrassed to wear. There were also no cups all night by the water fountain in the sauna area to get a drink. What a shame as we love this spa, so handy and great value but this trip really let it down.
If you like outdated decor and pickled food then this is your bag! I bought this package as a break for me and my best mate to relax and indulge in a vintage/sheek setting, but it was like walking into a time-warped hotel covered in flanneled upholstery from the Victorian times. Perhaps this is somewhere to go for the more mature adult and not if you're in your 20's! The food was minimal in quantity but maximum in richness - and pickles, even the cucumber! I would not recommend the hotel restaurant menu (unless you are acquainted with "chicken foam") but instead I would recommend the spa menu - it looked much better with cod and chips/paninis etc and I wish we had eaten there because we were left hungry after the restaurant food. Breakfast wasn't much better. As for the spa, the massage was good and the experience showers/sauna/hot-tub were exciting, but the pool was very small and full of love-struck couples tangled in each others legs. The decor in the spa was odd with modern facilities juxtaposed with Grecian pillars and rusty pipes. I'm glad my friend and I could have a laugh about our trip, but I will not be returning!
