I paid £75 for a 90-minute massage carried out by an untrained therapist. There was no discernible sequence or symmetry to the massage. It felt like she was making it up as she went along. She spent at least an hour on my legs for some reason even though I never said I needed any particular focus there and a good 10 minutes pulling my hair in an unpleasant way. The brief time she spent on my back was an oily mess. She didn’t pour the oil onto her hands first, just squeezed a huge quantity directly onto my back where it pooled and then dripped onto the mat. The stretches she attempted were, at best, half hearted imitations of Thai stretches or, at worst, in utter disregard of human anatomy.
I know what to expect from a Thai massage. I've had loads of them. The sequence tends to be more or less the same. This wasn't a Thai massage and wasn't even a good massage. Kobkun may not have the wherewithal to employ only excellent therapists, but even the less experienced ones should be trained to a reasonable level. I've had similar issues with the quality of therapists at Kobkun Upper Street, so it was probably foolish of me to expect an improvement at the Highbury location. After this experience, I will avoid Kobkun altogether, and maybe so should you.
The actual treatment was really good. Like others have said, I felt that sitting in the hallway and not having a shut off area was quite weird, especially when I needed to take off my jeans. I think having a more private area would help with the ambience, especially when a room is free.
There was minimal interaction from the staff when I entered the salon, I was only asked to provide my proof of payment and take off my shoes, clearly no time for niceties despite the salon being dead. The treatment was fine but I don't think she removed all the knots I needed her to.
