I've only had eyelash extensions done once before my visit to Lady Lash (and that was a year ago in New York), so I'm not sure if my previous experience was actually exceptional - or rather that my previous experience was the norm, and that Lady Lash was far below expectations. With that caveat, here goes my review:
The location was a bit tricky to find, on the first floor of a building right on Victoria Street, with an unmarked door (195-197). There is an academy sign advertising lash technician courses on the door of the Lady Lash office, which is a bit confusing. The office is one room, with a small reception desk and two beds . There is a window ledge that's been re-purposed as a waiting area, with some Russian-language magazines. Since it's not high up, the bustle of traffic is very noticeable, so not exactly the most relaxing of experiences. There were, of course, other reasons why the treatment was not relaxing, but I'll get into that down below...
My appointment was early Friday morning, with a "senior" technician, but I was surprised to see a younger girl (late teens, very early twenties?) sitting in the office, on her iPhone. When I walked in, she handed me a form to fill out, and went back to her phone. She was the only person in the office, and it turns out she was Mihaela, the senior technician with whom I had an appointment.
After I filled out the form and handed it back to her, she told me we could get started. She took one look at me (I'm East Asian), and said because my eyes were small, I should get Dolly-style lashes, which were longer in the center of the eye, and shorter on either end, to make them larger. She scrolled through some photos on her phone and settled on a photo of an Asian eye. "Exactly your shape, see?" she said to me. The woman's eye looked absolutely nothing like mine - I have a slight double eyelid, she had a monolid, my eyes are more almond shaped, hers were round. Literally the only thing the two of us had in common was that we were Asian. Ignoring this bit of casual racism, I replied that rather than the Dolly, I'd prefer to have a more natural looking set, J-Curl with relatively even length starting from the center to the outer corner of the eye. This is what I had done previously, and they looked great - my lashes but better - they had also lasted three months. She replied blankly, "So you want a cat eye?" Well, not exactly, but I tried to explain that I wanted something that looked more natural. But it seems that she was only familiar with the Dolly and the Cat Eye. Not a good sign, but I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. So I said, yes Cat Eye, and we got started.
After I got settled on the table, she held two sample lashes up to my lashline, and asked which one I wanted. Both were far too curly, and when I explained that I wanted a J Curl, she said they only had CC and D. Both of which are far too curly, and not the natural look I wanted. I decided on CC, which was slightly less curly option of the two. She looked at me doubtfully, and said that "this would look only like eyeliner," and started taping my eyes WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS (right from playing with her phone).
She starts applying the lashes, occasionally resting her hands on my forehead, cheeks and nose. When she was concentrating rather hard, she would even push down on my face, probably to stabilize her hand. I asked her several times to not press down on my nose and cheeks, with no avail. To make matters worse, her hands were cold at the beginning, and over the course of the treatment, her hands became much warmer, and even sweaty. She got up a few times - to turn on the fan, to turn on the radio, to get more lashes from the drawer - and each time she got up, I found myself hoping we were finally done.
When we finished, and I was handed a mirror, I was deeply disappointed in what I saw. Heavy, plastic looking lashes, with very thick roots, unevenly applied (the right and left eyes didn't even have the same number of lashes applied, but when I asked for her to apply another lash or two to even them out, she cut off two from the eye with more lashes...)
When I had extensions done previously, they had been silk (but looked like mink), and each individual extension was comprised of just one lash. My technician had applied all 110 lashes to each eye, in just over 90 minutes. These extensions were clumps of four lashes, and there were probably 20-25 applied to each eye, taking over two hours. They looked cheap, not to mention several have already fallen off over the weekend (I had them done Friday, it is now the following Tuesday). The irony? It cost twice as much in London as in New York. Maybe it's unfair for me to make this comparison, but this is the norm here, I feel deeply sorry for the ladies of London.
As for me, I may try another London salon in the future - or I may just wait until I'm back in New York.
