I arrived at the salon, a man at peace. This was my mistake.
The moment the polyester cape went on, I was trapped. Kay sensed my vulnerability immediately and wasted no time.
Sixty minutes followed. Her holiday. The dishwasher. Tiny ducks. A neighbour I don’t think I was supposed to hear about.
My hair, to its credit, was not ignored.
I learned a great deal. About Kay. About myself, perhaps.
When she finally spun the chair around, I looked at my reflection for a long moment.
It was fine.
