Generally really good. A little extra communication needed at times - e.g. we only found out by accident that our restaurant allowance was transferrable to ordering in the bar; also the staff in the spa, while friendly, gave conflicting answers about what treatments our package could include. The hotel doesn't really have any public lounge-type spaces. The only places to sit (apart from our room) were the bar and the bar/social area at the spa, which was a shame.
I should start of by saying the venue and facilities were nice, the staff on the whole were friendly, treatments very relaxing and the food was great. There were just a few things that really let it down. First off was value for money. We paid £112 per person so £224 in total. For this we received A double room (inc. breakfast) which (I checked online) was the best rate for the same night was £68, £70 worth of Spa treatments, a 3 course fixed priced meal £20 (per person) and a “Spa Gift”. The Spa gift was essentially a handful of freebie samples (disappointing). So essentially we paid around £25 each for access to the pool and steam rooms. On top of this, food and drinks we’re extremely expensive. The best part of £10 for two beers; and a light lunch, (tea, baked potato and a cheese toastie) came to £12?! I don’t mind paying a little extra when it’s worth it, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary, certainly no different to the facilities at my local gym. So while we had a perfectly pleasant day, I felt pretty short changed. Evening meal was delicious but when we came down for breakfast at 9.30am it was chaotic, the hot and cold buffet didn’t get replenished for the half hour we came down, so there wasn’t much choice (breakfast was 8.00-10.30am). We stayed in room 56, it was a big room and generally clean (few stains on the shower curtain) but the celling was paper thin, so we were awoken every time the guests above moved (which they started to do from 5am). Wanted to make a complaint, but as we were stood waiting for check out for nearly 20 minutes, by the time I’d got to the end of the line and had a night of disturbed sleep, I’d lost the will to live! Would I recommend? Only if you don’t mind paying over the odds for distinctly average quality.
The receptionists were very friendly and helpful. The part of the hotel we stayed in was very dated but not a major problem, just would have been nice to have a nice room. You have to go to the cafe to get into the spa. We were told directions to the changing rooms by one of the cafe staff, who to be honest seemed to have left her friendliness at home . We presumed that robes, towels and slippers would be there but no, so we had to go back to the cafe and ask for them! The changing rooms are horrible! Nothing remotely nice about them. 'Functional' is the only thing they were. The actual Spa was ok, the therapists were nice girls and the two treatments I had were lovely. However there was constant chatting outside the treatment rooms due to the fact that the manicures and pedicures took place there. This could do with addressing since the whole idea of treatment is total relaxation, which I find hard at the best of times! The location of the Spa isn't so good either - it's on the lower floor which seems a bit 'cellar-ish' although when you actually enter the spa area it is pleasant. You have to use the pool cafe upstairs, which is a nice area but you seem to be sharing it with the general public (or maybe gym members?) so you can't be shy if you want to sit around in your robe! One of the treatments I wanted I couldn't have because "Oh, I think the last Hopi Candle was used a couple of days ago". Not really a good impression and obviously it isn't that particular therapist's own business! It's a shame for the therapists cos they were actually really good but most other things let this place down badly. Would I go again - definitely no. Would I recommend to a friend - definitely no.
Unfortunately we were never able to use the spa facilities or stay at this hotel spa due a to a power failure that hit the area on Friday. Although this was not the hotels fault, myself and my partner both felt that we would have moved to the sister spa hotel quicker had we been correctly informed as to the whereabouts of the back up generator and the length of time it would have taken to be installed. In these respects, we both felt the hotel let us down
