17 photos that will have you reaching for the clippers

If you’ve spent any time on the internet recently (we’re having very different isolation experiences if you haven’t) then you’ll have seen the memes. “What you think you’ll look like when you shave your head (David Beckham vs. what you actually look like (Britney),” that kinda thing.

Buzz cuts aren’t just meme fodder though – they’re probably the biggest hair trend right now – thanks to isolation (boredom or closed barbers, you decide). As cuts go, it lends itself pretty well to DIY; quick, easy and grows out fast but, trust us, fades aren’t as easy as your barber makes them look. One-length allover is your best bet.

If you’re giving it a go, start with your clippers a grade higher than you plan to go (you can always go shorter). You’ll need to go over your hair a few times to get it even. It’s quick but don’t rush. Here’s some inspiration.

FAQs

How do you give yourself a buzz cut at home?

Start by using clippers a grade higher than you want for your final length. You should go over your hair multiple times for an even finish. This method is quick and simple, but taking your time helps avoid mistakes.

What is the easiest DIY haircut style to try at home?

A one-length allover buzz cut is the most straightforward DIY style. It avoids complex fades and is suitable for most people when doing their hair without professional help. The look grows out fast, so it’s not a big commitment.

Should you start with a longer or shorter clipper grade when buzzing your hair?

Begin with a longer clipper grade than you think you need. You can always go shorter if you want. Starting longer helps prevent accidental mistakes and allows for adjustments.

How can you avoid mistakes with a home buzz cut?

Don’t rush and go over your hair several times for full coverage. Using a higher grade first and taking it slow leads to more even results. This approach minimises errors that can be hard to fix at home.

Why are buzz cuts trending right now?

Buzz cuts are popular due to isolation-related boredom and closed barbers. Many people find it an appealing choice because it is quick, easy and grows out fast. It has also become widely discussed and meme-worthy online.
