4 things men need to know about the Hollywood wax (yes, men)

25 July 2018 by Beth Ryan

You might already know that the male version of the famous Hollywood wax has arrived – complete with its own legion of die-hard fans. If this is news to you, celebrate: this male waxing treatment leaves you smooth, supple and hair-free for up to six weeks. Now we reckon that’s better than a rushed trim with the clippers. Here are four things you need to know.

  • 1 It’s not like other waxes

The Hollywood is all or nothing. Some waxes, like the Brozilian, leave you with a trim triangle of hair, or a landing strip – not that different to a moustache, if you will. The Hollywood strips away every last hair – front and back – leaving you completely bare.

  • 2 The first time is the hardest

That goes for everything – from the stinging sensation to feeling a bit uncomfortable about baring it all to a stranger. That stranger's a therapist who does this every day, so if there's anything you're feeling self-conscious about revealing, chances are they won't even blink at it. As for that stinging sensation, it improves over time (but there are things you can do beforehand to help ease it a little).

  • 3 It’s worth a bit of preparation

We mean physically, not mentally. And actually this preparation involves you doing nothing at all (the best kind of preparation). Waxing is most effective if your hair's at least half an inch long, otherwise it's hard for the strips to get a good grip.

So you'll need to let your hair grow out before the treatment – that means no shaving or clipping.

  • 4 Aftercare matters

Freshly waxed skin can be a tad sensitive, so wear a pair of loose jersey joggers to your appointment. Bear in mind your skin might be a bit pink afterwards for an hour or so, but don't worry, the redness will die down. Rub in some gentle post-wax moisturiser like aloe vera to help it recover quickly.
