Most of us think of a facial as a one-off treat ⎯ perfect before a big occasion or once in a while as a bad skin or stress-busting solution. In reality, it’s a good idea to think of a decent facial as an integral part of your skin maintenance programme, and something to spend money on just as you would a serious moisturiser or serum. Okay so it might be a bit of an expensive addition, but when you consider not only how important your skin is to your sense of wellbeing and self-confidence, but also that it’s the only one we’ll have all our lives, it starts to make sense. In a nutshell, it pays to take care of it, and that means regular treatments to keep it radiant and healthy. Our Beauty Director Liz, spoke to Co-Founder and Creator of Elemis Therapies, Noella Gabriel about just how often we should be scheduling in some skin time….

1 How often should I be having a facial?
Although most facials deliver instant glow-giving results, if you want to see a real difference in the condition and health of your skin, you need to have one regularly. ‘Your skin cycle lasts 21 days. This means that to have an effective programme ⎯ one that generates long-lasting results ⎯ you should work with the natural rhythm of the body and have a facial every three to four weeks,’ says Noella. ‘Professional skin treatments are a little like hitting the gym – if you only go once, can you really expect to see changes?’

2 Should I stick with the same type or mix it up?
If you’re having a facial purely for relaxation, it can be tempting to flit from one type to the next. If you’re in it for long-term benefits choose one carefully, based on what your skin needs and stick with it. Your therapist can advise you on what type will be best for you after an initial consultation and it should be an on-going conversation, according to Noella: ‘Our skin is constantly evolving and ELEMIS therapists are trained to devise a bespoke treatment plan that meets your specific skincare needs.’

3 How important is consistency in a facial?
In truth it depends on what your skin needs ⎯ you may not always need extractions for example ⎯ but something like lymphatic drainage (long, flowing, rhythmic strokes that concentrate on moving fluid and accumulated toxins through your lymph nodes) is usually always a good idea. ‘The power of touch brings instant rejuvenation and lymphatic drainage is key within our touch facials,’ says Noella. ‘These vital massage movements help eliminate toxins and improve the circulation and skin quality.’

4 How do I decide on what type of facial to have?
Understanding how your skin behaves and what it needs is key to improving it and keeping it on a healthy, glowing track; it’s why that initial consultation is so important. As a rule, acne-prone skin benefits from facials incorporating bacteria-busting blue LED light, while dull, congested skin responds to microdermabrasion or facials that use a gentle acid peel. Opt for a facial with intense lymphatic draining or even microcurrent if you’re in need of tightening and lifting, and a super hydrating one packed with humectant-rich products if you want to focus on moisture. The technology available now is so advanced you'd be a fool not to make the most of it. Facials can also combine holistic and tech elements so you get the best of both worlds.

5 When is the best time to start a series of facials for a big event?
Before you begin any course of treatment, chat to your therapist about any watch outs and expectations. Something like a series of LED facials can take a few months to make a difference, while facials incorporating any kind of deeper exfoliation like microdermabrasion, should be booked in at least a week before your event, as they can cause skin to flake. When it comes to weddings? ‘It’s a good idea to start a focused skincare regime a good three months in advance of your big day. That way, you can discover what works best for you without running the risk of any last minute surprises of the unexpected blemish variety,’ says Noella.
