Your wardrobe might be saying summer, but we know that your beauty regime is already dreaming of a touch of Autumn polish. A sharp new cut, a sophisticated nail shade, a chic new hair accessory or maybe even a freshly plumped complexion complete with a ‘just-massaged glow.’ Our editorial director, Liz Hambleton shares her pick of the trends that will help you shake off your summer-self and move stylishly into the season ahead.

1 Haute headbands
Frizzy hair? Flyaways driving you mad? Greasy roots? Whatever your issue the haute headband is here to help this autumn/winter. Take your cue from the gorgeous look seen at Versace and opt for a fine, simple, black band worn in a 70s style. Set to be the party hair trend of the season; a soft centre parting and casually touseled hair complete the look. Hit the highstreet for affordable copycat pieces.

2 Glossy black manicures
We've said it before but we'll say it again: glossy black manis are set to be the nail trend of next season, so why wait to start wearing them? The key to keeping this super dark shade looking glossy (as opposed to gothy) is all in the type of manicure you have. Shine is everything and nothing delivers shine more effectively than a set of gel nails.

3 The slouchy ponytail
Planning on living in cosy cashmere sweaters and tailored boyfriend pants all winter? Then you’ll be needing an equally laid-back hair style to go with. Step up the slouchy ponytail; already a firm favourite with the FROW it’s literally the easiest hair trend ever. Simply tip your hair upside down, brush it out, secure in a ponytail about ¾ of the way down your hair with a snag free band and you're done. No effort hairstyling at its finest.

4 Boots on legs out
Who says you can't mix summer and winter? This look from designer Derek Lam at NY fashion week offers up the perfect opportunity to blend a bit of summer skin with a lot of winter boot. It might be a welcome relief from the pressures of a regular pedicure regime (take a break toes) but you'll need to stay on top of the spray tans for this trend to work.

5 Dark lipstick
Expect to see sultry shades of berry, wine, purple (and even black!) flooding beauty counters all over the nation. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt about this statement lip look, it’s how surprisingly easy to pull off it is. The rules are simple, lots of lip balm to hydrate and go for a semi-matt lipstick to avoid looking too polished. Try NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Scarlett Empress or Urban Decay Vice Cream Lipstick in Shame for a high impact, vamped up look.

6 Buzzcuts are back
There’s short, and then there’s the buzz cut. On the right person this high impact haircut can look achingly cool. Is it a look I’ll be trying? Probably not but I wish I could. If you’ve got confidence by the bucket load and cheekbones sharp enough to slice a loaf of bread on, then go for it. Our only advice is to go a shade lighter in colour than you normally would and invest in a set of HD brows and LVL lashes. A touch of pretty to offset the punky is required here.

7 Glitter tears
Great for an end of summer festival or a night out, glitter tears can be as crazy, or as a chic as you want them to be. Personally, we prefer a more minimal approach to the trend. This subtle but strikingly beautiful look from Tome NYC F/W 16 catwalk show is just the dream. Invest in face gems and apply them to the inner corners of your eyes. Stick to silver or clear for a modernist effect.

8 Grandad hair
Move over Granny, it's all about Grandad hair now. Riding on the coat tails of last season's hottest female hair trend, this just-for-boys colour trend is picking up some major traction in the fashion industry right now, having already been spotted on the likes of superstar and trendsetters Zayne Malik and Mark Ronson, as well as on the Alexander Wang catwalk this year. If you're looking to mix things up in the colour department, this silvery grey shade is decidedly dapper – just make sure to ask your stylist to lighten up your brows as well.

9 Patchwork eyes
Though not necessarily a look for everyone, we're embracing this experimental makeup trend head on. First spotted at Fendi's Autumn/Winter '16 show, we have a feeling we'll be seeing this arty take on eyeshadow a lot this year. Just be sure to keep rest of makeup super subtle to offset the intensity of your colour palette.

10 Just-massaged skin
Models were treated to luxurious facial massages backstage at the shows this season. The aim? Not to relax and pamper, but to create a vital, plump and glowing complexion upon which make-up artists could apply the most minimal of make-up. Simultaneously sculpting and plumping the face, this is one trend we can really get behind. Booking in now…

11 Skin on skin nudes
The new nude nail polish should look like an extension of your natural skintone. Get it right and it's fresh, flesh-toned and flattering. But swing too far towards muddy browns and you'll be missing the point completely. Pale neutrals, painted on neat, round nails are the way to go here. This neutral nail should read buffed as opposed to shiny.
