Until you’ve had a facial, it’s easy to think of it as, well, a glorified face wash and, I guess on some level, it kind of is. It’s still worth getting one though – even just for that proper squeaky-clean feeling alone. If you’re thinking of giving it a go, here’s some of the stuff you might be wondering about.

1 Shaving; yes or no?
If you have a beard, don’t shave it off just for your facial. Your facialist can concentrate on the hair-free areas, like your T-zone. If you normally shave (clean-shaven or stubble), shaving is a good idea so that the products can penetrate. You’ll want to do this the day before though – shaving exfoliates the skin and can leave it too sensitive for certain treatments.

2 It’s relaxing, but not necessarily pain-free
A facial is legitimately relaxing but it can be uncomfortable too, at times. There will probably be some element of extraction. This is basically when your facialist uses a combination of tools and (gloved) fingers to unclog your pores – where the discomfort comes in, unsurprisingly. Don’t be put off though, it is worth it. Especially with male skin which is particularly prone to blockages.

3 The results might not be instant
Your skin might not look its best directly after your appointment. It will probably be a little red, that’s from the exfoliation and extractions. It will settle, though. With some treatments (like dermaplaning), your skin might dry out over a couple of days before clearing. Your facialist will fill you in on the results (what and when), so you’ll know what to expect.

4 It’s a good way to learn about your skin
Your facialist will ask you what your main skin concerns are (blackheads, breakouts, fine lines). They’ll also be able to see things that you might not have, so don’t be offended if they make some suggestions – products to use, what to avoid and the like. They’ll talk you through each stage of your appointment too, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
