You know a trend is turning into a classic when the likes of Cate Blanchett gives it a go. Stepping right out of her hair colour comfort zone and into the pretty new world of pink, she’s given this experimental shade a much needed dose of sophistication. ‘I’m seeing a real shift in the kind of woman who wants to go pink,’ explains colourist Sophie Woods, from Lockonego salon in Chelsea. ‘It started out as a very young trend but the pinks I’m able to create now are so flattering and pretty, it’s attracting a much glossier, grown up client.’
In the last few weeks, Sophie (Who happens to have the perfect shade of candy floss pink hair herself) has transformed 12 of her regular clients by swapping their signature hair colour for various shades of blush, rose, pastel pink. ‘It’s all about creating a bespoke shade to suit someone’s complexion,’ explains Sophie. ‘If the mix of tones is right your skin will pop, your eyes will look brighter; it’s the same as having a fresh new set of highlights.’ If you want to try it out for yourself, Sophie’s advice is simple; ‘although it’s possible to go pink from any shade of hair colour, if you’re starting with a darker base you will need to have it stripped back with bleach.’ Maintenance is similar to highlights or balayage so you’ll need regular trips to the salon to sort out your roots and keep the colour fresh. ‘I tell my clients to mix a little pink hair colour with their conditioner to top up between visits.’
