Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past year, you might have noticed that rainbow and multicoloured hair is having a serious moment, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. Where these electric hues may originally have been reserved for punks and partygoers, now more than ever a much broader range of people are opting for more expressive shades at the salon – and no one has realised this more than Wella. Their new Color Fresh CREATE range features a semi permanent palette of 12 specially crafted shades, making it even easier to achieve your hair of dreams. We sat down with Wella’s Technical Educator Fergal Doyle to answer all your burning hair colour questions – so whether you’ve already taken the plunge or are considering a change, you’ll be armed with all the info you need on how to both achieve and maintain a modern colour update.

1 How do I choose the right colour for me?
First things first – just because a colour looks great on Instagram, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be an achievable shade for you. ‘Bring pictures of different colours you like and ask your Wella Colourist which one best suits your skin tone’ explained Fergal. ‘We’re experts in selecting the perfect shade and placement to complement your skin tone, eye colour and face shape. If none of the pictures you chose are perfect, we can tweak them by adding some cool or warm shades into the mix to personalise the colour just for you.’

2 How often can you colour your hair with Color Fresh CREATE?
‘As often as you like, there is zero damage with Color Fresh CREATE so the possibilities are endless!’ explained Fergal. ‘It’s important to bear in mind though, that bleaching hair can leave it feeling stressed and dry, so make sure your colourist uses a protective, bond-multiplier product such as WELLAPLEX to protect your hair during the lightening service. Using WELLAPLEX No3 Hair Stabilizer weekly at home as a mask will protect the bonds inside your hair and leave it feeling strong and shiny. Speak to your hairdresser about the right home care regime to look after your new colourful style.’

3 Does it work on any hair shade?
‘Color Fresh CREATE works best on lighter depths such as bleached or naturally white hair – the lighter the hair, the more pastelised you can make your shade choice.' explained Fergal. ‘If you have darker hair but still want to update your look and are apprehensive about going lighter, you could use colour Fresh Create on some clip in hair wefts. They’re low maintenance, low commitment and can completely change your look in seconds.’

4 Does Color Fresh CREATE work on afro hair?
‘Yes! As long as it has been lightened sufficiently’ explained Fergal. ‘Check out @WellaHair and @WellaHairUK on Instagram for some inspiration.’

5 Can you mix the colours to create a bespoke shade?
‘Absolutely’ explained Fergal; ‘Color Fresh CREATE provides true to tone pastelisation, meaning you can mix a clear shade and vibrant shade together to create the perfect pastel hue. Every shade is intermixable so we can create a bespoke colour just for you.’

6 How long will my colour last? How can I maintain it?
Color Fresh CREATE fades true to tone and lasts up to 20 washes, but there's plenty you can do to maintain the shade for as long as possible. ‘Avoid using very hot water when shampooing the hair’ explained Fergal; ‘(cool or luke warm water is best), use a colour safe shampoo like Wella Color Brilliance Shampoo or System Professional Color Save Shampoo and use a repairing conditioner on bleached hair such as Wella FUSION Conditioner or System Professional Repair Conditioner.'

7 How do you ensure you're picking the right salon to achieve a modern colour look?
‘Do some online research’ suggested Fergal; ‘Instagram or Facebook are the perfect tools to hunt for a new look. Search for the hashtags #colorcreators #sayyestocolor and #stylistsdoitbetter. Also, look online at treatwell.co.uk for your local Wella salon and ask if they have a Master Colour Expert to help transform your hair.’
