These copper hair shades will make you want a colour change

Published on 10 September 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

I think autumn gets a bad rap. Yes, it means summer is over – did it even begin? – and yes, it can be an absolute nightmare to dress for – freezing in the mornings, boiling by lunchtime – but it’s all my warm-toned dreams come true. So, you can imagine my joy at the copper hair trend. Bonfires, golden leaves, pumpkin spice: super-warm tones are inherently autumn (read: I’m already on board).

Auburn is a failsafe – the brown undertone flatters all skin tones – but if you’re after added-drama, go for a rich copper. Just like rainbow brights, copper tones can fade quickly so be sure to go sulphate-free with your shampoo and conditioner and turn down the temperature on your shower. This will keep your colour looking fresh.

Keep it monochromatic or add high/lowlights for dimension. Not ready to give up your balayage? It’s not just for blondes, you know. Ginger shades look great rooted with a warm brown.

FAQs

How can you keep copper hair colour from fading quickly?

To keep copper hair colour from fading, use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner and turn down the temperature on your shower. These steps help maintain your colour’s freshness and vibrancy for longer.

Which copper hair shade suits all skin tones?

Auburn is a failsafe copper shade because its brown undertone flatters every skin tone. If you want more drama, you can go for a richer copper, which offers a bolder look.

Can you add dimension to copper hair with highlights or lowlights?

Yes, you can add dimension to copper hair by including highlights or lowlights. This technique creates visual interest and depth without changing your base colour.

Is balayage only for blondes or can you try it with ginger shades?

Balayage is not just for blondes; ginger shades look great with balayage, especially when rooted with a warm brown. This gives a modern and blended look perfect for autumn.

What makes copper hair colour especially popular in autumn?

Copper hair colour reflects autumn’s warm tones, reminiscent of bonfires, golden leaves and pumpkin spice. These rich shades make it a popular choice for the season’s aesthetic.
