Each to their own on hair removal folks (I’m all for keeping my hair in tact when the mood strikes), but if you are shifting it this Friday 13th, please don’t risk a DIY disaster. Nowadays there are a number of methods for shifting unwanted hair including threading, laser, epilation and removal cream, but today I’m fighting waxing’s corner, as a swift treatment for mighty-smooth legs that’ll keep me hair-free through my holiday and beyond. Save yourself the at-home struggle and head to the salon for a wax. No luck required with this trusted treatment, here are a few of the benefits.

1 No chance of accidents
You can’t argue wth this one. I’d say it’s been a solid 7 years since I avoided a cut when sliding a razor across my stubbly shins (the knees, every darn time). Of course, with a wax, you’ll feel a stinging sensation as the hair is removed, but it’s a brief burn that quickly subsides (and your beautician will teach you how to breathe through it – happy thoughts, happy thoughts). No more torn up tissue speckled across your legs to stop never-ending bleeding. Rejoice.

2 It’s kinder to your skin
Unlike topical hair removal creams that can cause irritation, or frequent razor use, waxing is a lot more gentle on the skin. Wax products are made from natural ingredients so will help to prevent pigmentation or skin damage (or stinking out your bathroom with pungent removal cream). Better yet, waxing will also help to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin, so acts like an indirect exfoliator, meaning even softer legs. The hero of hair removal: am I right?

3 It lasts longer
A wax usually lasts for up to four weeks, and though hair will grow back in this time, it’ll come through finer and more sparsely compared to shaving. You’ll need to wait until your hair length is around a grain of rice in length (food comparisons, always easy to interpret), before you can head for your next wax. How’s it softer? Well, shaving cuts hair at the surface of the skin, leaving a blunt tip that’s largely to blame for those pesky ingrowns, FYI), waxing removes hairs from the root, allowing regrowth with a finer tip. Repeat waxing damages the hair papilla (supplying nutrients to allow hair to grow), without it, hair growth becomes more infrequent.

4 It'll save you time
Yep, not just time spent flexing into yoga positions in the shower to reach the back of your thighs. Waxing removes that ‘daily shave’ need that lots of harbour (though I’m happy to let my leg hair sretch far beyond the visible-through-tights stage). A salon trip will take around half an hour – then last up to four weeks – so if you’re a frequent shaver, it’s definitely the treatment to consider. Spend those extra five mins in the shower sharpening up your vocals instead.
