What is it about long hair in Liverpool? The average head of hair seems to be at least six inches longer than the rest of the country, not to mention a whole lot thicker. Now, unless they’re putting something in the water we’d hazzard a guess that this is the work of hair extensions. And good hair extensions at that. On a recent trip to Liverpool, our Editorial Director Liz Hambleton discovered the city’s go-to destinations for instant length and volume. Here’s her guide to where to go and what to ask for…

1 Voodou
Best for: laid back, cool girl length
If you're hankering after natural looking, longer hair then head to Voodou for a fix of their much coveted 'The Hippy Club' hair extensions. A firm favourite with the long-haired Liverpool set, The Hippy Club is a brand of real hair extensions available in a length of upto 25 inches long. That's long enough to skim the top of your bottom FYI. With no bulky bonding or tacky textures, it's near impossible to tell you've been 'extended' and I was genuinely amazed at the results. The team at Voodou work hard to get the colour match as close to your natural, or almost natural hair colour as possible. This makes all the difference.

2 White Haus Hair & Beauty
Best for: extra body and bounce
Hair extensions aren't just for extra length you know. At White Haus Hair & Beauty you can bump up your body and bring a little bounce into your style at the same time. As someone who has had very long, straight hair for years i've always wanted to know how I can do exactly that. Turns out it was within my reach all along. The grade AAAA Indian Remy hair extensions used here at White Haus are slightly shorter and slightly heavier than other styles of extensions making them perfect for adding guts and glamour to most hair lengths.

3 Paul's Hair & Beauty World
Best for: a complete wardrobe of hair extensions
I'm a little bit obsessed with Paul's Hair & Beauty World in the Cavern Quarter of Liverpool. It's a mecca for the hair savvy of the city and is packed with everything you'd ever need to get, keep and look after your extensions. It also happens to be a very popular salon. Selling every style, shade and type of hair extension you could ever wish for, it's possible to have your consultation and fitting in the same appointment. The staff here really know their stuff and I was expertly guided through all my options including synthetic, clip in, remi hair, instant weaves and real hair pieces. I also found their advice on styling and up keep extremely useful and practical.

4 Vogue Hair & Beauty Lounge
Best for: Saturday night glam
Hair extensions can be a time-consuming business. On average you need to allow at least two to three hours per appointment so you might as well do it somewhere you can kick back, have a glass of wine and maybe get your nails done at the same time. At Vogue Hair & Beauty Lounge you can enjoy the latest lash extensions and acrylic nail extensions, as well as your lovely new set of hair extensions. In fact, I thought it was the perfect place to spend a Saturday afternoon of general beautifcation before a big Saturday night out on the town.
