    Trending now: the anti-flower crown

Published on 11 August 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

We’re just going to come out and say it: they were adorable while they lasted but this summer we’re jumping on the anti-flower crown bandwagon, and we invite you to jump on with us. Sure, they may conjure up imagery of 70’s hippies and ethereal fairytale characters (not to mention the masses at Coachella) but now, after some time, they’ve become about as basic as drinking a pumpkin spice latte while wearing Uggs and Lululemon yoga pants. Don’t do it people.

It’s time to move on, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still incorporate flowers into your getup next time you’re heading to a hedonistic festival or wedding this summer. Lately we’ve seen sleuths of models and celebrities rocking floral in a whole new way, putting a modern spin on this romantic style and reinventing the dreaded crown into something all the more tantalising.

Think fresh roses woven delicately into a heidi braid, embellished buns and cascading ponies subtly dotted with wildflowers; and if all else fails, why not just OD on baby’s breath like the impish models strutting down Rodarte’s Haute Couture show. Short hair or long, there’s so many ways to rock flowers this summer that don’t involve emulating a funeral wreath. Not sure how to pull it off yourself? Next time you’re booking in for an updo, bring along some freshly cut flowers and ask your stylist to work their magic. You’ll be looking like a pastoral pinup in no time…

    FAQs

How can you use flowers in your hair without wearing a crown?

You can ask your stylist to weave fresh flowers into a braid, bun or ponytail. Popular options include roses in heidi braids and wildflowers added to cascading styles. This gives your look a modern, romantic update without using a traditional crown.

What types of hairstyles work well with fresh flowers?

Fresh flowers can be styled into heidi braids, embellished buns and cascading ponytails. Even short hair can be decorated by pinning blooms through the style. Adding flowers creates a soft, pastoral appearance for any hair length.

Can you bring your own flowers to a hair appointment?

Yes, you can bring freshly cut flowers to your hair appointment. Let your stylist know you want to incorporate them into your updo or hairstyle, and they can work their magic for a unique, summery finish.

What is an easy way to get a floral festival or wedding look?

Overdosing on baby’s breath or having wildflowers dotted through your hair is a simple way to create a floral look. This approach is inspired by high-fashion models and is perfect for festivals or weddings, creating a delicate and ethereal vibe.

Is adding flowers to your hair suitable for both short and long hair?

Yes, you can style fresh flowers in both short and long hair. Options like pinning flowers through shorter styles or weaving them into longer braids and ponytails make this trend accessible for anyone.
