Whether you’re aiming for carved-out arches, or just in need of some brow TLC, threading is the super-precise, natural route for hair removal. The method originated in Persia way-back-when (5,000 years ago to be exact), and is still one of the swiftest techniques for expertly-shaped brows. If you’re yet to try it, expect enviable arches, minimal pain, and lots of spontaneous sneezing. Make sure to head for to your appointment with enough hair to work with, and ease off the eye makeup if possible, just in case things get teary (from the tugging, not the results). Here’s exactly what goes down at a brow threading appointment.

1 It will start with a consultation
(Usually). Speak with your beautician before they start threading to decide on the shape. Your first appointment is a big deal, as this is when the structure of your brow will be formed. Take an inspiration image with you if there’s a specific shape you’re going for, or just describe how you’d like the brows to look (they know what they’re doing). If it’s just a tidy up, say so. Your therapist may work on instinct otherwise, so get talking.

2 The threading begins
So, how’s it done? The process uses a doubled-up and twisted piece of thread, which rolls over unwanted hair like a baby lasso. This plucks hair one-by-one from the follicle. It can feel a little strange – as though hair is being shifted from your forehead at times – but trust us, the results are super precise. You’ll be asked to ‘pull’ throughout, this means pressing to seperate your eyelid from the brow (so your therapist can reach the right angles). Just ask if you’re unsure how it’s done.

3 Perfecting the shape
FYI, the more hair, the better when heading for a thread (so they can really work on crafting a shape). Once the threading is sorted (and you’ve sneezed 50+ times), the beautician may ask if you’d like your brows trimmed. This will help to maintain the shape for longer, and control unruly hairs. If your hair is fine, or your brows are a little sparser, feel free to pass on this. Coloured brow pencil might be offered too – take it, this will give that ‘HD’ effect.

4 What’s your verdict?
‘Do you want gel?’. Um, always. This finish-up aloe vera gel is cleansing, and seriously soothing: it will ease any redness or tingling (it’s a good idea if you’re heading straight back to the office post-thread). A quick comb through, then time to reveal. You’ll be handed a mirror to take a look at the results – really take a look. Now’s the time to speak up if you’d like any additional hairs shifted (don’t be nervous to ask for exactly what you want). Then wave ta-ta ‘til your next appointment – in around three weeks time.
