We all want a mani that’s long-lasting, stays extra shiny and dries almost instantly. That’s why we go gel. But do properly preened fingertips come at a price? It’s one of life’s unanswered questions. UV, polish removal, and giving our nails a ‘breather’, we’ve done the research, once and for all. Scroll through this (with those gel nails we know you’re currently sporting), to find out just how ‘dangerous’ your monthly salon trip is. We’re finally answering it – does a gel manicure damage nails?

1 UV is always bad news
We’re all worried about UV exposure – given its rep – so sticking our hand beneath a UV lamp to ‘cure’ the polish inspires tentative feelings all round. Well, good news. The UV ‘dose’ you’ll experience during a gel mani is seriously brief, plus salon technology has come a long way, with many brands converting to LED curing (same drying effect, without the scary side effects). Slathering a little sunscreen on your hands pre-appointment for skin protection is a good idea – peace of mind and healthier hands.

2 Take a break (not a breather)
Shocker, nails aren’t gasping for air when your gel polish is removed. Why? Because they aren’t alive. Cuticles and nail beds are formed of living tissue, however, so regular manicure trips will help to keep them well-nourished. Worry less about their ‘breathing’ and more about maintaining good condition – continue to apply cuticle oil outside of salon trips and never. ever. pick at the polish.

3 We said never
Yes it feels great, yes there truly is no greater satisfaction (aside from the 'takeaway is here' doorbell), but picking off your gel polish is an all round no-no. We’re all guilty of it, but peeling will seriously damage nails, reaching the 'plate' beneath and leaving your tips thin, weak and brittle. Removal at the salon takes under twenty minutes, and you won’t be left with those dodgy white marks on your nails (or, you know, the shame of wrongdoing).

4 So what's the verdict?
Does a gel manicure deserve it's ‘dangerous’ rep? Well, it’s a tricky one. With the correct care and removal of the polish, your nails will maintain their tip-top condition. Head to a nail technician (instead of DIY), time your treatments (weekly manis aren’t required), and remember: cuticle oil is friend, peeling is foe.
