DNA braids are the (tricky) hair trend sweeping the Internet

Published on 13 August 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Periodic table – nope, twisted hair braids that look like DNA helix chains? 100% yes. This is the kind of science my trend-led brain can get on board with.

Though fishtails, pipe braids and the good old french plait remain comfortably positioned in my hair-styling repertoire, this one’s too fancy-looking to resist. The good news? It’s not all that tricky to replicate. You’ll start with three sections (okay, manageable), then get to weaving over and under. There’s a proper tutorial here so you can watch the process step-by-step – easy (ish).

The technique is even sweeter when paired with multi-coloured pastel tones, or balayaged locks (*books last-minute hair dye*).

It’s new, it’s different, it’s a lot of patience, but the good stuff usually does. Weddings, festivals, work procrastination, whatever your excuse for trying out DNA braids, we think you should give it a go.

FAQs

What are DNA braids and how do they look?

DNA braids are twisted hair braids that resemble a DNA helix chain. They create a unique and intricate hairstyle that stands out from traditional plaits like fishtails or French braids.

How do you create a DNA braid hairstyle?

Start by dividing your hair into three sections, then weave the sections over and under in a specific pattern. This technique makes the style look complex, but it can be achieved with some practice and patience.

Is it difficult to do DNA braids yourself?

DNA braids might look fancy but are not all that tricky to replicate. Following a step-by-step video tutorial can make the process manageable, even for those new to braiding.

Which hair colours work well with DNA braids?

Multi-coloured pastel tones or balayaged hair enhance the look of DNA braids. These colour choices make the twists and turns of the braid even more striking.

When is a good time to try DNA braids?

DNA braids are perfect for weddings, festivals, or even if you want to style your hair while procrastinating at work. This trendy hairstyle fits a range of occasions from special events to everyday fun.
