At 15, my sister asked me to dye her hair platinum blonde. I grabbed a paintbrush – only the finest equipment used in my salon (bathroom) – some cling film, and a box of hair dye. £5 from Bodycare, naturally. I applied it. Waited thirty mins. Then unstripped the cling film from her hair, to reveal a speckled colour selection of brown, Sunny-D-yellow, and deep orange. We both learnt a lesson that day; my sister would only ever trust the salon, and I was to move far, far away from her for a good few months. Older, wiser, and with good hair on everyone’s agenda, it’s in the pros we trust. Here’s one of them – Wella’s Technical Manager – telling us which trends are expected to be big. Interestingly, DIY ‘leopard-print’ doesn’t crop up.

1 70s
‘Amber slate’ was a Wella-branded colour harnessing a lot of attention at the start of the year, and it seems, ‘throwback tones’ are sure to continue throughout the season. “The 70’s isn’t going anywhere” – explains our Wella insider – “so expect to see warmer shades intertwined in rich bitter brunettes. For blondes, it’s all about adding dimension; bespoke ribbons of colour will create more luxe, high-shine results.” After all, nothing beats a really great balayage.

2 Brunette
Step away from platinum shades (if my short story hadn’t already confirmed it), brown hair is the way to go this year. “Rich, high-shine colour is set to be big for 2019; brunettes are going to have their moment.” So, what shade are we talking? Well, all of them. “Achieving the ‘right’ brunette is not from one solid colour. It’s about playing with different finishes (from products), and tones, to create a colour that looks natural and ‘lived in’.”

3 Pastel shades
Pastel shades have proved popular for the last few years, largely thanks to the ease of hair chalk, and Avril Lavigne influence. Wella say it’s back with a (kind, soft, gentle) bang this year. “Ask your colourist to create soft results, it’s less about vivid striking colours, more sherbet-inspired shades.” Pre-coloured hair can get involved too; “pastels look great over classical highlights, and will bring a balayage up to date.”

FAQs
What hair colour trends are popular from the 70s right now?
Amber slate and other “throwback tones” with warmer shades are trending, especially in rich bitter brunettes. For blondes, adding dimension with bespoke ribbons of colour gives a more luxe, high-shine finish. Balayage remains a popular choice for a great modern update.
How can you achieve a natural-looking brunette shade?
A natural-looking brunette is created by blending different finishes and tones rather than one solid colour. Using various products, hair colourists craft a shade that looks natural and “lived in” for a rich, high-shine effect. This approach gives the hair more depth and dimension.
What should you ask your colourist if you want pastel shades?
Ask your colourist for soft, sherbet-inspired pastel results instead of vivid, striking colours. Pastel shades can be applied over pre-coloured hair, such as classical highlights, to bring a balayage style up to date. These gentle hues have become increasingly popular for a subtle, modern look.
Why is it better to trust salons for hair colouring instead of DIY methods?
Professional salons provide more reliable and even hair colouring results compared to DIY attempts. Trying at-home colouring without expert help can lead to patchy or unexpected colours, as seen with at-home platinum blonde turning out brown, yellow, and orange. Salons offer the experience and tools needed for safe, attractive results.
How can you book a hair colouring treatment at a salon?
You can book a hair colouring treatment quickly and easily online with Treatwell. Booking is hassle-free and can be done on the go, letting you discover reputable salons for your preferred hair colour trend in your area.
