I saw a meme the other day that said: “my eyebrows literally need a haircut, not a wax” and, well – I can relate. Growing out your brows at home can be the perfect opportunity, without having to worry about that seriously unruly phase. But, with salons reopening, it’s time to hand them over to a professional. We spoke to the unrivalled queen of brows, Shavata, about which treatments to try.

1 Brow tintIf you want a more defined brow, tint is the way to go. “Tinting also makes the brow look thicker,” Shavata explains, “by darkening the fine hairs around the brow so you can see them better”. The tint lasts around 4 weeks – oh, and it’s great for covering greys (yep, eyebrow greys). Pair it with a brow shape for the best results.

2 Brow shapeAh, the old unanswered question; waxing or threading? Shavata weighs in, “both achieve the same result and last a similar length of time (around 6 weeks) – because they both remove the hair from the root – but threading allows therapists to isolate individual hairs easier to help shape the brow”. Whichever you pick, a brow shape defines and adds structure (to your whole face, not just your brow).

3 Brow laminationBrow lamination is the new kid on the block. It basically involves brushing the brows up and using a solution to set the brow hairs in place. The result? “A fuller, thicker and fluffier looking brow that requires minimal effort (just a brush through and a dab of oil for nourishment) for up to 8 weeks”, Shavata says. Fuss-free.

4 Semi-permanent brows“Semi-permanent brow treatments tint the skin underneath the brow, not the brow hairs,” Shavata explains. You start off with a consultation to discuss your desired brow look (shape, arch, ombre effects) then, during the treatment, a dye is injected a few layers under the skin’s surface. The initial colour starts off darker then fades (after about a week) to a more natural shade and lasts 1-2 years.
It’s nearly time for salons to reopen (finally). With Treatwell, you can book beauty online at all your favourite salons – simple, hassle-free, and you can do it on the go. Discover amazing salons in your area.
FAQs
How long does a brow tint usually last?
A brow tint typically lasts around 4 weeks. This treatment darkens the fine hairs around your brow, giving a more defined and thicker appearance and is also a great way to cover greys.
What is the difference between brow waxing and threading?
Both brow waxing and threading achieve the same result and last about 6 weeks, as both remove hair from the root. However, threading allows the therapist to isolate individual hairs more easily for precise shaping.
How does brow lamination work and how long does it last?
Brow lamination involves brushing the brows up and setting them in place with a solution. It gives you a fuller, thicker and fluffier look that lasts for up to 8 weeks and needs minimal daily effort—just a brush through and a bit of oil for nourishment.
What happens in a semi-permanent brow treatment?
A semi-permanent brow treatment tints the skin underneath your brow, not the brow hairs. Dye is injected a few layers under the skin, with the initial colour appearing darker and fading to a more natural shade after about a week. Results last 1-2 years.
Can you combine brow tinting with brow shaping?
Yes, you can combine a brow tint with a brow shape for best results. Tinting makes your brows look thicker and more defined, while shaping adds structure to your face overall.
